Policy Statement 

It is our policy to keep children safe when they are in our care. A risk assessment has been carried out and will be reviewed annually. Reasonable steps will be taken to minimise any identified risks. We regularly review, update and practise our safety routines including emergency evacuations.. In addition, we carry out risk assessments on an ongoing basis depending on activities offered to the children. The staff are all first aid trained and can administer basic first aid treatments. Our first aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible to everyone. We hold written permission from parents on the child’s registration form to seek emergency treatment for their child if it is needed. 

The first aid box is located on the kitchen hatch.

Procedure 

➢ We will follow any set procedures given to us by the parent/carer if it was known that the incident could take place (for example: a child having a seizure or going into anaphylactic shock due to an allergy)

➢ We will reassure the injured child, while making sure that the other children in our care are safe.

➢ We will assess the extent of the injuries and carry out any first aid procedures that are necessary and 

that we have been trained to do. 

➢ If the incident is not resolved we will call NHS direct and follow their guidance. 

➢ If the incident is serious we will call 999. 

➢ Once the child is settled we will contact you as soon as possible to inform you of the incident and if 

necessary ask you to return to care for your child or meet us at the hospital. 

➢ If there is an incident, you may be contacted and be expected to collect your child straight away. 

➢ In the event of a minor incident I will call the parents if I feel they need to know prior to collection. 

➢ After every incident we will complete an accident report form and ask you to sign the report and then 

provide you with a copy. 

In the event of a major accident 

➢ We will make the environment safe for all the children we are caring for. 

➢ We will follow the agreement made with the parents on what to do if the child requires emergency 

medical treatment, as detailed in the child’s registration form.. 

➢ We will call the parents or another emergency contact for further guidance. 

➢ We may need to call 999. 

➢ We must notify Ofsted of any serious accident, illness or injury to, or death of, any child whilst in our care, and of the action taken in respect of it. Notification must be made as soon as is reasonably practicable, but in any event within 14 days of the incident occurring. 

➢ We must notify local child protection agencies of any serious accident or injury to, or the death of, any 

child whilst in their care and act on any advice given. 

➢ We will notify our insurer. 

➢ We will record all the information on the accident in the accident record form.
